Renovation Tip: Affordable and Easy Kitchen Cupboard Upgrade

One of the easiest ways to improve the style of a kitchen is to start with upgrading the cupboards. A simple and cost-effective way to do this is with the Shaker look.

Period Living explains the appeal of Shaker design:

Simple, versatile and effortlessly beautiful, Shaker design has stood the test of time and remains one of the most universally popular choices for kitchens. An unpretentious style, at its basic level it consists of well-crafted furniture that is really rather plain, but can be dressed up or down to suit different tastes…

…The Shakers were a self-sufficient community who keenly made and sold furniture renowned for its high standards of craftsmanship. The design of the pieces was understated, durable and practical. Made out of local timbers, such as pine and cherry, everything had a place, and the furniture looked just as good on the back and inside as the front

How to do the Upgrade

  1. To update kitchen cupboards, even if they are plain melamine, glue pine strips around the edges of each cupboard and drawer.
  2. Paint the existing cupboards and pine strips, in the colour of your choice.
  3. Add new knobs and you now have the “Shaker Look“!
